Today, those of us in the US (and many around the world) celebrate the legacy of Dr Martin Luther King Jr with a day of service to our communities. It's incredible to see the contributions made by members of our non-profit community as we leverage our skills to move us towards a more just world. As you read through this edition of the PUB Crawl, consider your gifts and talents and how they could be contributed to our community in the spirit of service. Each moment we take for each other, the better chance we have to reach the type of world Dr King believed we could create together. With that spirit in mind, here's the latest contributions from your friends in our Salesforce community! Don't forget, you can have the goodness of the PUB Crawl delivered into your inbox each Monday morning by subscribing today! If you're on the east coast of the US right now, just let me know, and I'll send one of our penguins' friends (a rescue dog) out to find you in an ice-covered snow drift somewhere. With a laptop. So you can read this. Inside the friendly confines of the Soapbox Engage headquarters, we're thinking of warmer places right now as the NPSP Day calendar fills up. This year, we're adding two new continents to the tour, spreading the spirit of the open source NPSP community down to our friends in the southern hemisphere. Keep your eyes on the NPSP Day website as the calendar is populated, and see if a community event rolls through a city near you! In the meantime, stay current on what’s happing in the HUB in the comfort of your own chair with this week’s PUB Crawl! Don't forget, you can have the goodness of the PUB Crawl delivered into your inbox each Monday morning by subscribing today! As the clock struck midnight on New Year’s Eve, we ushered in not only a new year but a new tax code that reshapes our economy in fundamental ways. With the doubling of the standard deduction to $12,000 for individuals and $24,000 for married couples, estimates project that as few as 10% of taxpayers will continue to itemize. This marked decrease means that donating to your nonprofit just got more expensive for most of your supporters since doing so won’t carry a tax benefit. Experts predict this to cause a drop in charitable donations of around $14 billion in 2018, or 5 percent of the $282 billion that nonprofits raised in 2016. Key to responding to this changing charitable landscape is recognizing a fundamental fact: fundraising is primarily about a relationship. That relationship isn’t with the Internal Revenue Service. The key relationship is between your donor and your organization and its mission. Understanding that relationship and how it changes over time as your supporter moves through their donor journey is more critical now than ever. But how? Good morning friends (as I write this at 10pm ET)! For those of you just waking up from a long night/day's sleep, I just wanted to provide a few quick updates. First, 2017 really did happen. All that stuff. Yep, it happened. Second, I'm here to help you get focused on the road ahead. Somewhere between your stack of thank you's in your outbox and the resolutions in your inbox, is the faint memory of all the awesomeness that we saw in the Salesforce community in 2017. Allow me to give you a quick synopsis: this community rocked it! Multiple community sprints, 14 NPSP Days, 25+ NPSP software releases, more Power of Us Hub posts than I can count, and a ton more. Considering all that we've accomplished together in 2017, I have a feeling 2018 is going to be record breaking year for this community. Let's catch up on what you missed during the end-of-year craziness with a roundup from last week's knowledge. Don't forget, you can have the goodness of the PUB Crawl delivered into your inbox each Monday morning by subscribing today! Issue 116 For our readers celebrating the holiday today, Merry Christmas! I’ll keep this one short, mostly because I'm working between multiple helpings of food and desserts. It's been an honor to hop into your inboxes this year, and I'm looking forward to hopefully being the first email you receive in 2018! For those of you who are taking the week off between Christmas and New Year's, here's what you missed...a few weeks ago. Happy New Year amigos! Don't forget, you can have the goodness of the PUB Crawl delivered into your inbox each Monday morning by subscribing today! Well, the good news is that we all survived the annual holiday party at Soapbox Engage's international headquarters in DC (penguins included). The bad news is that I still have stomach aches from the pounds of homemade cookies I ate (alas, no burritos!). All that sugar rush has given us quite the Salesforce knowledge push though, with two new certifications under our collective belts and a brand new Trailhead Ranger among us. Of course, every ranger needs a sidekick, so we're lucky to have one of those in the Soapbox Engage family, too! Since many of you are now hibernating in your warm offices, push aside the holiday fruitcake or yummy sufganiyah and let's get focused on some Salesforce knowledge. It's PUB Crawl time! Late Wednesday evening of Dreamforce, I wandered into Moscone West with a distinct purpose: secure Codey, the stuffed bear, to give to my 15-month-old son upon my return home. In the process of tackling the three tasks required to win said bear, I ended up creating a brand new Trailhead account and was instantly hooked on the training opportunities it offered. Within a month, my Dreamforce-born obsession spurred me to reach the highest Trailhead rank of Ranger and pass the Salesforce Administrator certification exam. 1/10/2018 UPDATE: My son is a month older - and I am an additional certification deeper into my Trailblazer journey after passing the Salesforce Certified Platform App Builder today. Here are eight observations about my journey for others interested in going from gamified Salesforce learning to real-world certification: Oh the weather outside is frightful, but this week’s edition of the PUB Crawl is delightful (see what I did there?). It seems that winter has decided to show up here in DC, so the Soapbox Engage penguin has waddled inside our holiday office for the week to warm up. This week's PUB Crawl is one of our biggest in a while. I guess it's that last-minute crunch heading towards the finish line of 2017's giving season. Grab your hot winter beverage, and hop into the PUB Crawl for last week’s round-up from the Salesforce community. Don't forget, you can have the goodness of the PUB Crawl delivered into your inbox each Monday morning by subscribing today! With #GivingTuesday now behind us, it's time for the final end-of-year fundraising sprint for many of us. At the same time, it's planning season for 2018. So while you're filling out your calendar, if you're attending the Nonprofit Technology Conference in New Orleans in April, join us the day before for the first NPSP Day New Orleans! For now, take a sip of your favorite peppermint mocha, and enjoy this week's edition of the PUB Crawl. Don't forget, you can have the goodness of the PUB Crawl delivered into your inbox each Monday morning by subscribing today! Ah yes, it's the eve of #GivingTuesday. This late-night edition from the US is for all you tired fundraisers out there. It's pencils down and feet up on the couch for those of you who worked hard to build social media and email campaigns. While you prepare for tomorrow, take a snack break and take a chance to hear what's happening in the Power of Us Hub. Next week, I can't wait to hear how #GivingTuesday went for your team. Share your stories with me, and in the Power of Us Hub, and I'll make sure they get spread for others to read. Good luck out there! Don't forget, you can have the goodness of the PUB Crawl delivered into your inbox each Monday morning by subscribing today! As we roll into the Thanksgiving week in the US, the calendar reminds us to pause and notice that there's much gratefulness to have in life. For me, the list includes the opportunity to share knowledge with those making a difference in the world. And for my barely-making-it-but-working wifi in the Arctic Circle today. I'm thankful for the opportunity to take what I'm learning and deliver it to those working hard to move our world in the right direction. It's been an honor to hop into your inbox every Monday, and I look forward to avoiding your Spam button for many years to come. While you're conjuring up your thankful moments, and before the frostbite sets in, take a moment to enjoy this week’s warm cup of knowledge. Also, send mittens. And hot coffee. Don't forget, you can have the goodness of the PUB Crawl delivered into your inbox each Monday morning by subscribing today! From #GivingTuesday to the end of the giving season, it will be critical for fundraisers to keep close track of progress toward their fundraising goals. For those with Salesforce, you can facilitate that by scheduling a report on that progress so it is emailed to key staff daily. This step-by-step recipe will walk through the creation of a fundraising report and how to schedule its delivery. For other last minute #GivingTuesday tips, watch our webinar, #GivingTuesday Fundraising for Procrastinators. If you're at Dreamforce today and reading this email, STOP, look up, and don't walk into that street sign. Now that you're safely walking through Dreamforce, if you see me, say hi! I spent the weekend alongside fellow founding farmers at the Goat Farm Foundation retreat in Marin, preparing for tomorrow's #goatlaunch at Yerba Buena Park Esplanade at 2:30pm. Don't worry, no goats will actually be launched, and trust me, it will be easy to find us. We'll be announcing an entirely new way to bring together the best knowledge in our community and point it towards successful outcomes for the non-profit sector. In the meantime, grab yourself a tasty beverage, and enjoy this week's PUB Crawl. It’s November - when the pumpkin is spicier, the turkeys more restless, and red lines on budgets prepare to turn black. Nearly one-third of the year’s giving will occur starting November 28th through the end of the year. And while this time is critical for meeting your bottom line, complicated it need not be. We humbly offer five simple wishlist items for your fundraising strategy to get your last minute gifts in order. An amazing amount of community engagement took place this past week, as the NPSP Day West Coast swing was in full effect, sweeping through Portland and San Francisco. Both events saw a growing number of attendees, with NPSP Day San Francisco nearly doubling since last year! This week, I'm putting the captain's hat in storage, and donning the Goat Farm Foundation cap as we head into Dreamforce. There's a huge world of non-profit technology that could use your brainpower to find and fill gaps in our ecosystem. We're looking to wrangle some of that goodness together at Dreamforce on Tuesday, Nov 7 at 2:30pm at Yerba Buena Gardens Esplanade. Come join us! If you're heading to Dreamforce, I'd be excited to meet you! Just reply to this email, and let's connect. For now, sit back, relax, and enjoy this week's pour of Salesforce knowledge. Don't forget, you can have the goodness of the PUB Crawl delivered into your inbox each Monday morning by subscribing today! As you gear up for #GivingTuesday and the entire end-of-year giving season, context can be critical in goal setting and fundraising strategy. With this step-by-step recipe, you can easily Report on year-end giving from those who gave for the first time last end-of-year seasons vs. previous donors who gave during that same period. This can help you craft goals for overall end-of-year giving as well as specific targets for new donor acquisition. For other last minute #GivingTuesday tips, watch our webinar, #GivingTuesday Fundraising for Procrastinators. Salesforce offers simple yet powerful ways to organize your fundraising campaigns. Through the use of Campaign Hierarchies, you can corral various marketing efforts and responses to those efforts into a cohesive whole that lets you report on total giving for a broad range of efforts. What's more, you can track costs associated with each of these Campaigns and compare the total investment across that range of efforts to dollars raised. While Campaign Hierarchies are standard in Salesforce, a Salesforce administrator needs to take a few steps to make the summary information across an entire hierarchy visible on the parent Campaign. This step-by-step recipe walks you through how to do so. Using this functionality is a quick and easy way to bring all of your #GivingTuesday fundraising activities under one proverbial data umbrella in Salesforce for straightforward analysis. For other last minute #GivingTuesday strategies and Salesforce tips, register to attend our free webinar, #GivingTuesday Fundraising for Procrastinators, on Thursday, November 16th at 3 pm ET. I'm somewhere over Wyoming right now. Maybe that's Nebraska. I'm not sure, I can't see the lines from the map right now because the ground is dark. Anyway, I'm en route to NPSP Day Portland in the middle of a three-stop NPSP Day tour, culminating in a burrito-fest at NPSP Day San Francisco on Thursday. I'm sure we'll talk about Salesforce in San Francisco, but man, the burritos! This crew below came together last week for the first NPSP Day Chicago (they held strong the day after that last Cubs game), where we had a chance to dive deep into pretty much everything from grants (shoutout to the community members working on that!) to data importing. As I reach up for another coffee (bing!), I give you another week of Salesforce knowledge. No turbulence ahead, you're free to move about the PUB. Enjoy! Since Spring ‘17, the Lightning URL contains the record ID and putting a Classic URL into Lightning will just work. Great! But the URL format for Lightning users is different than it was. In Classic, the format is very simple: your instance’s My Domain and then the record ID after the slash. It looks like this: Before Dreamforce last year, a small group of non-profiteers met in Marin to imagine a new era in non-profit technology. We believed that there could be a new way to organize community for the types of projects that might get overlooked because their constituencies were too small, or their use cases too...edgy. I mean, look at Justin in this photo. It was imagination time in overdrive. After a year of discussion, interspersed with periods of navel gazing (i.e. doing our full-time jobs), we've come to the realization that our idea has an opportunity to change the way individuals are empowered to find and fill gaps in the non-profit technology ecosystem. So here we go. On Tuesday, Nov 7 at 2:30pm during Dreamforce, join the founding farmers of the Goat Farm Foundation at Yerba Buena Gardens Esplanade to learn how we all can roll-up our sleeves to build non-profit tech solutions in a totally new way. Want to see just how crazy these ideas are? Check our our new public mailing list and read my concept paper for a distributed autonomous organization that empowers folks like yourself to both contribute and have a direct say in the future of the organization. Now that you're either fired up or thoroughly confused, grab a drink of your choosing, and saunter through this week's PUB Crawl!
