Recently, Giving U.S.A released their 2023 report on giving trends in the U.S. Here is a helpful summary from BWF. There is a lot of useful data that can inform your nonprofit’s fundraising strategies. Giving has declined over the last year. In 2020 and 2021, we saw historic highs in giving, due to the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, and racial justice being a major national conversation. Charities received $499.33 billion in support in 2022, which is down from $516.65 billion in 2021. Fewer people are making charitable donations and Americans are now donating only 1.7% of their disposable income.

It takes a lot of work to solicit major gifts to fund your nonprofit’s mission. If you’ve already completed the research portion of your efforts, you’re one step ahead. Prospecting, or the process of identifying and learning about donors with a high likelihood of giving major gifts, is a crucial part of fundraising. But once you’ve combed through your donor database and found individuals with both the financial capacity and willingness to give to your cause in large amounts, what comes next? We’ll break down these five steps your nonprofit can take to pave the way for successfully securing major gifts:
There is a lot of discussion in fundraising about “the ask.” And while asking your donors is an important part of fundraising, we know it’s far from the only one! That’s why a fundraising calendar is so useful. Fundraising calendars are designed to outline donor correspondence, campaign timelines, special events, benchmark dates, and other noteworthy occurrences that your fundraising team will be engaged in over the course of the year.
