Salsa Engage Alternatives for Nonprofit Advocacy Teams

Title card reading 'Salsa Engage Alternatives for Nonprofit Advocacy Teams' with the subtitle 'Where your petitions and targeted actions can go next'

If your organization runs petitions and targeted actions on Salsa Engage, you've probably heard mixed messages about the platform's future. Bonterra, which owns Salsa, announced plans in 2022 to retire Salsa products, then changed course. Salsa Engage still runs today, and Bonterra still maintains it, but Bonterra's own site now refers to it as legacy software.

For advocacy teams, that's less an emergency than a planning question: where should your action campaigns and petition lists live for the next several years? If you want advocacy and donor data working together, Soapbox Engage Actions and Soapbox Engage Petitions are a strong answer: two focused apps that sync each action and signature to Salesforce or Microsoft Dynamics in real time, with published pricing and no per-signature fees. This guide covers where Salsa Engage stands, your options, what to inventory before you move, and how the platforms compare.

In This Guide

Soapbox Engage Actions connects supporters with their officials and syncs each action to your CRM.

Where Salsa Engage Stands Today

Salsa Engage has changed hands and changed plans more than once in the last five years. Here's the short version.

June 2021

EveryAction acquires Salsa Labs, announcing it as the company's "6th and largest acquisition."

2022

EveryAction and the companies it acquired, Salsa Labs included, become part of Bonterra.

September 2022

Bonterra announces plans to retire Salsa products in early 2024 and to offer migrations to EveryAction or Network for Good, as one nonprofit technology consultancy reported at the time.

After customer pushback

The retirement plan is delayed and then walked back. Salsa Engage stays available to existing customers.

Today

Bonterra's Salsa Labs page says there are "currently no plans to sunset Salsa Engage" and that Bonterra maintains it to keep it "stable, secure" for nonprofits "who want to remain on the legacy software."

The current status is clear enough: Salsa Engage works, Bonterra supports it, and there's no announced end date. The same Bonterra page also says the company's goals for its customers will be met through software built on EveryAction, Network for Good, and Mobilize "rather than Salsa Labs."

Maintenance and development are different commitments. Maintenance keeps a platform stable and secure. Development adds the capabilities advocacy teams ask for next, like better targeting, new action types, and deeper CRM reporting. Bonterra has said where its development is headed, and that isn't Salsa.

That shifts the question from "when do we have to move?" to "where do we want our advocacy program to be in three years, and do we want to choose the timing ourselves?"

Get it in writing: Ask your Bonterra account representative to confirm current support terms, renewal options, and any planned changes for Salsa Engage before your next renewal. Plan around their answer, not around older announcements or this article.

Salsa, EveryAction, and Bonterra: How They Relate

The three names are often used interchangeably, which makes comparison shopping confusing. They share a parent company, but they aren't the same product.

Bonterra
The parent company. It owns EveryAction, Salsa Labs, Network for Good, Mobilize, and several other nonprofit software brands.
EveryAction
Bonterra's CRM and engagement platform for fundraising, advocacy, email, and texting. Its capabilities are now part of what Bonterra sells as Bonterra Fundraising and Engagement.
Salsa Engage
Salsa Labs' digital engagement platform for email, forms, fundraising, and advocacy. Maintained by Bonterra as legacy software.
Salsa CRM
Salsa's donor database, often paired with Salsa Engage. Many Salsa organizations used it instead of Salesforce.

If your organization is on EveryAction rather than Salsa, our EveryAction/Bonterra advocacy alternative guide covers that comparison directly. The rest of this post is for Salsa Engage users.

Your Three Options for Salsa Advocacy

Each option below is a reasonable choice for some organizations. The right one depends on how satisfied you are today, what CRM you run or plan to run, and how much of your stack you want to change at once.

Option 1

Stay on Salsa Engage for now

If your campaigns run smoothly, your contract terms work, and your team has no capacity for a migration this year, staying put is a legitimate choice. Bonterra continues to maintain the platform, and there's no announced shutdown.

Watch for

New advocacy features are being built elsewhere. Use the time to inventory your setup and pick your next platform, so the move happens on your schedule, between major campaigns, rather than in response to a future announcement.

Option 2

Move to Bonterra Fundraising and Engagement (EveryAction)

This is the in-house path Bonterra offers Salsa users. Bonterra's EveryAction product description covers federal, state, and local targets, with fundraising, email, and texting in the same system. It suits organizations that want one vendor to be both their CRM and their engagement platform.

Consider

This is a full CRM migration, not an advocacy swap. Supporter records move into Bonterra's database, and if Salesforce stays your system of record, you'll keep two databases aligned. Pricing is by custom quote, and you stay with the same vendor whose plans for Salsa have already changed course.

Inventory Your Salsa Advocacy Setup

Before you compare platforms, list what you use today. Bonterra's own Salsa Engage product description (March 2025) is a useful checklist. Here are the advocacy-related tools it describes, and what to plan for in a replacement.

Salsa Engage tool What it does What to plan for
Targeted actions Supporters enter an address and contact their representatives by email, phone, or X post without leaving the page Which officials you target most and which channels your supporters use
Custom targets Imports your own list of targets for an action Whether you contact people outside legislatures, like agency heads or local officials
Petitions Signature forms built in the Activities tab with the visual editor Signature goals, social sharing, and where signer records end up
Email blasts and email series Sends action alerts and automated follow-ups after a supporter acts Which tool sends alerts and follow-ups after the move
Text messaging Broadcast texts and text-to-initiate keywords Whether texting stays bundled with advocacy or moves to a dedicated texting tool
Groups Static and dynamic supporter segments for targeting Whether segments live in the advocacy tool or in your CRM
Tracking codes Shows which emails and links drive actions Source tracking that writes to each supporter's record
Salesforce integration Available to "customers who bought our integration with Salesforce," who "run/manage syncs between the two platforms" Whether a new tool syncs in real time or on a schedule, and whether that costs extra

Mark each row as "use weekly," "use occasionally," or "don't use." That list becomes your requirements document, and it keeps vendor demos focused on what your team does day to day rather than on the longest feature list.

If petitions are the bigger part of your program, our guide to online petition software for nonprofits covers what to look for, and what a petition can do beyond collecting signatures covers how to turn signers into long-term supporters.

Keep Your Petition List Growing

Soapbox Engage Petitions syncs each signer to your CRM, with no per-signature fees.

Why Your CRM Decides the Right Replacement

The biggest difference between your options isn't the action page builder. It's where supporter records live and how advocacy activity reaches them.

  • Salsa Engage keeps supporters in Engage, paired with Salsa CRM or connected to Salesforce through an integration purchased separately. Salsa's Salesforce help documentation covers configuring how often those syncs run, in part to manage Salesforce API limits.
  • Bonterra Fundraising and Engagement is a CRM in its own right. Bonterra offers a two-way Salesforce integration package with real-time or scheduled sync options, according to its community help documentation. If Salesforce stays your system of record, you'll be keeping two full databases aligned.
  • Soapbox Engage is built around the CRM you already run. Each action and signature creates or updates contact records and links to campaigns in Salesforce (NPSP or Nonprofit Cloud) or Microsoft Dynamics in real time, with no separate advocacy database to reconcile.

The CRM angle

When a supporter who emails their senator is also a monthly donor, both facts belong on the same record. Your development team can see who your most engaged advocates are, and your advocacy team can see which campaigns bring in new donors. That only works when action data reaches the CRM promptly and matches the right contact.

Not on Salesforce or Dynamics?

Many Salsa organizations run Salsa CRM, so leaving Salsa Engage often means replacing the donor database too. If that's your situation, choose the CRM first, then choose advocacy tools that integrate with it. Our post on signs it's time to switch advocacy software covers that sequencing in more detail.

Soapbox Engage can help with both pieces. Our team also sets up and supports CRMs, so you can move your database and your advocacy program with one partner instead of coordinating two vendors.

Salsa Engage vs. Bonterra vs. Soapbox Engage

Here's how the three compare on the questions that shape an advocacy program after a switch: where your data lives, how it reaches your CRM, and what it costs to grow. Salsa and Bonterra details come from Bonterra's published product descriptions and help documentation.

Soapbox Engage stands out on the rows that shape daily work after a switch: supporter records that live in your CRM instead of a separate database, real-time sync to Salesforce or Dynamics, and pricing you can see before you talk to sales. Bonterra's platform also bundles texting, fax delivery, and click-to-call, so if those are central to your program, plan for them alongside your advocacy apps. For a wider view of the market, our comparison of seven advocacy platforms covers Quorum, Muster, VoterVoice, and others.

How to Move Your Advocacy Program Off Salsa

A platform move doesn't have to interrupt your campaign calendar. These six steps keep the switch orderly.

1

Inventory your live activities

Use the inventory table above to list active targeted actions, petitions, autoresponders, email series, and groups. Note which ones are evergreen and which are tied to a single bill or moment. Retired campaigns don't need to be rebuilt.

2

Export supporter and activity history

Before your access or contract ends, export supporter records, action and signature history, and group membership. Then decide which history should be imported into your CRM and which only needs to be archived for reference.

3

Settle where supporter data will live

If you're on Salesforce or Dynamics already, that's your answer. If you're leaving Salsa CRM, finish the CRM decision before you rebuild action pages, so new campaigns write to the system you'll keep.

4

Rebuild your highest-traffic pages first

Recreate the action pages and petitions that bring in the most supporters, then update website embeds and email links to point to them. Replace Salsa tracking codes with tracking URLs so you can keep measuring which channels drive action.

The CRM angle

In the Soapbox Engage Actions app, marketing tracking URLs save source data to your CRM, so channel reporting can live in the same Salesforce or Dynamics reports as the rest of your supporter data.

5

Pilot one campaign before moving the rest

Run a smaller petition or a single constituent ask on the new platform. Confirm that records match the right contacts and land on the right campaign before you move your biggest campaigns. Our guide to launching a constituent action campaign works well as a pilot plan.

6

Time the cutover around votes and renewals

Avoid switching in the weeks before a key vote, hearing, or budget deadline. Check your Bonterra renewal date and notice terms so you're not paying for two platforms longer than you need to.

Rule out a strategy problem, too: If part of the reason you're looking is that fewer supporters take action than they used to, a new platform alone won't fix it. Our post on why advocacy campaigns are underperforming in 2026 covers the causes worth checking, and our step-by-step campaign guide can help you relaunch on the new platform with a stronger plan.

How Soapbox Engage Replaces Salsa Petitions and Targeted Actions

Soapbox Engage covers Salsa's two core advocacy tools with two separate apps: Soapbox Engage Actions for targeted actions and Soapbox Engage Petitions for petitions. Each integrates with Salesforce (NPSP and Nonprofit Cloud) and Microsoft Dynamics through real-time sync, so advocacy activity sits next to giving, event, and volunteer history on the same record.

Why Soapbox Engage Fits Salsa Advocacy Teams

Advocacy data lives in your CRM

Each action and signature creates or updates a record in Salesforce or Dynamics the moment it happens. No second database, no scheduled imports.

Pricing you can see up front

Plans are published, petitions are unlimited, and there are no per-signature fees, so a viral petition doesn't become a budget problem.

Your supporter list stays yours

Export supporter and message details as CSV files whenever you need them, with no per-name costs and no third-party branding on your pages.

A long-term nonprofit partner

Soapbox Engage has served nonprofits for more than 25 years and has been a Certified B Corp since 2012.

Two apps that work together

The Petitions app grows your list and shows public support. The Actions app turns that momentum into constituent messages to the officials who decide.

Room to grow on one connection

Add Donations, Events, or Auctions later, and they sync to the same CRM, so advocates and donors stay on one record.

Soapbox Engage Actions

The Actions app replaces Salsa's targeted actions for outreach to elected officials. It:

  • Matches supporters to their officials by district, covering U.S. House members, senators, state legislators, and governors.
  • Pre-fills names, addresses, and salutations for each official, and lets supporters personalize a templated message.
  • Builds branded, mobile-friendly action pages with a point-and-click builder, without developer help.
  • Previews campaigns in Test Mode before any real messages go out.
  • Creates or updates contact records in your CRM as supporters take action, so advocates don't end up duplicated across systems.
  • Tracks actions, social shares, and conversions in real-time dashboards while a campaign runs.
  • Exports supporter and message details as CSV files at any time, with no per-name costs.

Soapbox Engage Petitions

The Petitions app replaces Salsa petitions and is built for list growth. It:

  • Runs unlimited petitions with no per-signature fees.
  • Displays live signature counts and progress toward a goal to build momentum.
  • Matches signers to existing contacts or creates new ones in Salesforce or Dynamics as they sign.
  • Links each petition to a Salesforce campaign and maps signer data, including custom fields, to the CRM fields you choose.
  • Captures UTM source, medium, and campaign with each signature, so you can see which channels drive sign-ups.
  • Customizes sharing messages for Facebook, X, LinkedIn, and email.

"The Soapbox Engage Petitions app offers a ton of great customization features and delivers a gorgeous user experience... outstanding, personalized customer service. A+++!"

Laura Shapiro, Director of Online Communications, Global Fund for Women

Help With the Move

You don't have to plan the switch alone. Each app comes with a 14-day free trial that includes setup assistance, so you can rebuild a real campaign and watch the records land in your CRM before you commit. If you're replacing Salsa CRM at the same time, our team also sets up and supports CRMs, so your database and your advocacy program move with one partner. Plans and costs are listed on the Soapbox Engage pricing page.

The fastest way to see whether it fits is a short demo. Bring a list of your active Salsa campaigns, and we'll walk through how each one would be rebuilt and how the resulting actions and signatures appear in your CRM.

Salsa Engage Alternative FAQ

Is Salsa Engage being discontinued?

Not at the moment. Bonterra, which owns Salsa, announced in 2022 that it planned to retire Salsa products in early 2024, then changed course. Bonterra's site now says there are currently no plans to sunset Salsa Engage and describes it as legacy software that Bonterra maintains to keep stable and secure. Confirm current support and renewal terms directly with Bonterra.

Are Salsa, EveryAction, and Bonterra the same company?

They share a parent company but are different products. EveryAction acquired Salsa Labs in 2021, and both became part of Bonterra. EveryAction is Bonterra's current CRM and engagement platform, now part of Bonterra Fundraising and Engagement. Salsa Engage is maintained as a legacy product.

What is the best Salsa Engage alternative for advocacy?

For advocacy teams that want supporter data in a CRM they control, Soapbox Engage Actions and Soapbox Engage Petitions are a strong fit. They sync each action and signature to Salesforce or Microsoft Dynamics in real time, with published pricing, no per-signature fees, and a free trial that includes setup assistance. If you'd rather have one vendor provide your CRM, fundraising, email, texting, and advocacy together, Bonterra Fundraising and Engagement is the path Bonterra offers Salsa users.

Can we switch from Salsa Engage if we don't use Salesforce?

Yes. Soapbox Engage apps integrate with Salesforce (NPSP and Nonprofit Cloud) and Microsoft Dynamics. If you're also moving off Salsa CRM, choose your new CRM first. The Soapbox Engage team also sets up and supports CRMs, so you can make the move with one partner.

Will we lose our advocacy history if we leave Salsa Engage?

Not if you plan for it. Export supporter records, action and signature history, and group membership before your Salsa access or contract ends, then decide which history should be imported into your CRM and which should be archived.

Does Soapbox Engage charge per petition signature?

No. Soapbox Engage Petitions has no per-signature fees and supports unlimited petitions. Current plans are listed on the pricing page.
